This Swedish Woman Creates Stunning Braided Hairstyles And Teaches You How To Do It Yourself
The oldest known reproduction of hair braiding is actually on the head of the famous Venus of Willendorf herself, the figurine that was made around 30,000 years ago. Hair braiding is traditionally called a social art because it is usually not such a short process to braid, it allows people to socialize and bond. Also, older generations teach their children how to braid, so it is a tradition that is passed down from generation to generation. And even though braiding hair is a classic, this girl has totally reinvented the whole thing. Every braided hairstyle she creates looks like a stunning masterpiece that you could easily imagine on a Disney movie princess. Elvira has an Instagram account called @inspobyelvirall which now has over 37,000 followers and her feed is full of fascinating artwork. Ziomara Asprilla Garcia remembers the click, click, click of her mother's hands quickly braiding strands of hair and twisting them into neat rows under a mango tree in Colombia. She quietly watched as her mother parted her sister's hair and twisted it into elaborate hairstyles, continuing the centuries-old tradition of Afro-Colombian women braiding their hair. "I was always curious and captivated by the way my mother moved her hands," says Asprilla Garcia, who came to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival to represent the Afro-Colombian women of Choco. She works under a sign that says "Tejiendo Colores", "Weaving Colors". Behind her, a second sign reads that "the art of hairdressing has become an icon of Afro-Colombian identity"." How long does it take ? asks Betty Belin, a viewer holding a snapshot of an intricate design. "Three hours," Asprilla Garcia said in Spanish, through a translator. A little girl with blonde hair climbs into a chair and Asprilla Garcia takes strands of a green acrylic hair extension and wraps them around strands of the girl's hair, intertwining them into a single long braid. "He had thick, tight braids, braided tightly across the scalp and tied in buns on top," says Asprilla Garcia. The curved braids would represent the routes they would use to escape,” says Asprilla Garcia. "In the braids they also kept gold and hid seeds which in the long run helped them survive after their escape."
"Why didn't they speak the messages?" someone asks. “At that time, many owners understood their language,” says Asprilla Garcia. "Always," says Asprilla Garcia, "there was a great mother in the whole group." These matriarchs always had a distinctive hairstyle. "It's a movement to remember what our ancestors brought with them when they came," she says. We carry on this tradition. »
Nowadays, says Asprilla Garcia, braiding has become a way to communicate pride and freedom from oppression. "I find it magnificent," says Asprilla Garcia.
